Description

D+A Studio has experience in custom residential, commercial, land-use, site planning, feasibility, remodel, multi-family, and mixed use projects. We offer design counseling services for home owners and Realtors, including feasibility studies and remodel consultations for a straight-forward fixed fee, in order to make design services more accessible. Studio How, our design build team, provides general contracting services. We strive to create elegant, sustainable solutions by working closely with each client. We recently worked with an owner-builder to design a simple straw bale home which is currently under construction. Our San Juan Channel House, completed last year, was an AIA Seattle Top 10 What Makes it Green? Project. This home features geothermal heat, advanced framing, non-toxic, low-VOC and recycled finishes, and salvaged materials such as doors and plumbing features. D+A Studio has two offices, on San Juan Island and in Seattle. Principal Anna Howden runs the main office on San Juan Island,

Green Steps Taken

We have two offices in order to cover more of the area without excessive transportation. Our San Juan Island office is out of our Principal?s self-designed award winning home. The Seattle office is a co-working space shared with 2 other small businesses, which is accessible by walking or biking. Principal Anna Howden is a National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) Certified Green Professional. We are members of Built Green of King and Snohomish Counties, EcoBuilding Guild Central Puget Sound Chapter, and of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), under which Project Manager Anne Hamilton became a LEED Accredited Professional in 2006. These affiliations and continuing education allow us to provide expertise and sustainable design for every project, even for those projects where the clients had not planned to build green.

Surprising Successes

Winning AIA Seattle Top 10 What Makes it Green award (young, female-led design team competing against more established, mostly male-led larger firms), being published in Seattle Magazine (Northwest Home ?Smart, Sustainable Design? Issue, July 2009)

Having Trouble With

Maintaining the integrity of the sustainable aspects of projects from beginning to end, especially when the project passes to other trades such as contractors and engineers, or budget issues arise and elements of sustainable building, which will save money in the long run, are cut to lower the construction cost.

Giving Back

San Juan Island (Principal Anna Howden): Speaker for the San Juan Island Navigating Our Future Conference; Volunteer for the Downtown Design Committee; Volunteer for the local Transportation Committee/Volunteer member of the Historic Preservation Board; Support local sustainable stores such as ?Compost It? and the local Food Coop. Seattle (Project Manager Anne Hamilton): Volunteering doing taxes for low-income people through United Way Free Tax Campaign (personal income taxes and a pilot program doing Schedule C?s for sole proprietorship’s, such as home daycare)-6-8 hrs weekly during tax season; personal donations to KUOW and Seattle Public Library each year; member of Central Co-op?s Madison Market; volunteer time and personal donations to Treehouse for Kids.

Hi! I am a small business owner in Seattle and I am launching an organic baby hat company next month. I also drive a hyprid car

Green Steps taken

Everything that can be recycled in my shop and my baby clothing business as well as at home is. We also use almost zero paper in our business except for shopping bags.

Surprising Successes

The amount of waist that can be recycled and reused when you really try.

Having Trouble With

It has been quite difficult to source cute organic fabrics and trims. I have had a bit of luck, but it is still a challenge. Organic materials are very expensive as well, which does put my cost of goods up.

Giving Back

I purchase local products as well as have locally made garments and jewelry available in my shop. We support our local merchants at our Farmer’s Market as well. We donate and buy a lot from local charity shops.

Description

I have been living in Seattle for 6 years, learning so much about resource conservation, relying on local resources, and the power of community. Two years ago I started a business with a friend of mine called Office Nomads. We are a shared office space for independent professionals and telecommuters. The goal around our space is to empower the independent workforce and enable them to do what they do best without having to be isolated by working from home or busy coffee shops. It’s all the great things about having an office (coworkers, shared resources like coffee and conference rooms) without all of the bad (bosses, office politics, cubicles).

Green Steps Taken

In the last 6 years, I have been a volunteer coordinator for a local recycling and composting education program, learned how to compost at home, sourced office supplies from local suppliers, got rid of my car, committed to never buying another to-go coffee cup again, learned how to grow my own food, and started a business in my neighborhood that encourages folks to commute less and commune more.

Surprising Successes

That my business has survived the first two years successfully, and has become a happy home office for more than 20 local independent professionals.

Having Trouble With

Truly sourcing all green office supplies for my business. Keeping my long-distance relationship as green as possible (he lives 2 hours away in the North Cascades, so we have to rely on transportation to see one another).

Giving Back

Both personally and through my business, I am incredibly involved in my local community. First and foremost, we are creating a local community of workers here at Office Nomads. Beyond our internal community, we (Office Nomads and myself personally) are deeply involved in Sustainable Capitol Hill, our neighborhood sustainability group. We are also members of the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce, connecting us with other local businesses on the hill. I am a member of the Madison Market’s Central Co-Op.

I’m an editor on the Books team at Amazon.com, but gardening and inspiring others to garden are my true passions. I’m currently working on transitioning into a career as a gardening coach and/or garden designer.

Green Steps Taken

I’ve become a certified permaculturalist at the Bulluck’s Farm on Orcas Island, taken a mushroom propagation course with Paul Stamets, and learned much about gardening, growing healthy soil, and creating my own habitat for hummingbirds, bees, and other critters in my own garden. I have a worm bin. And my husband and I are working on creating space at our home in West Seattle for workshops on propagation, container gardening, cooking with locally raised foods, and other activities to help spur our community’s transition toward sustainability.

Surprising Successes

My most exciting success so far has been the flourishing of our garden, which will be featured on an HGTV program next month.

Having Trouble With

My demanding work schedule makes it challenging to go carless and prepare healthful, sustainable food. I’ve recently hired a life coach to support me in a more healthy lifestyle and transition into a career that better aligns with my core values.

The Wallingford Botanicals concept comes from a need for whole-body care products that do not contain toxic-Paraben based preservatives, synthetic fragrances and or dyes but yet retains the efficacy of all natural root-ingredients with an exceptionally elegant appeal. Aside from our focus for offering the best all natural body-care products, we are taking steps in giving back. We are members of the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce as well as the Wallingford Community Kitchen. Currently we are working with 1% For The Planet in becoming members as well. We at Wallingford Botanicals hope to offer a product people can feel happy about having out on their countertops as well as in their hearts.

Green Steps Taken

The office: Wally workers will be conducting most of their R/D in home offices in an effort to reduce gas consumption. We have partnered with an eco-friendly cosmetic laboratory located in the Pacific Northwest whose practices and environmental beliefs are aligned with ours. Additionally, we hope to have our fulfillment entirely electronic in an effort to minimize paperwork. Our home offices are Green-conscious with recycling posts, compost pales as well as energy efficient efforts.
The Product: All of our products will be free of toxic-Parabens, Synthetic Fragrances and Dyes. The Packaging: Only recycled packaging will be considered as well as re-usable containers.

Surprising Successes

These are yet to be discovered.

Having Trouble With

We are looking for facilities that would donate their space for monthly dinners to low-income families. Additionally we are looking for individuals who would like to volunteer their skills to teach the parents and children at these dinners (subjects are tbd). If you are interested, please email skimbrough@wbotanicals.com or kweaver@wbotanicals.com

Numbers that actually empower small businesses–now that’s accounting! I like to help owners find empowering numbers, using QuickBooks, accounting services, training and consulting. Besides experience with small businesses, I’ve also worked with non-profits, alternative healthcare, construction and eco businesses.

Steps Taken

In my business, I use recycled paper products wherever I can and save or send things electronically instead of printing and mailing. At home, I’m starting a worm bin for my kitchen scraps, am growing veggies on my condo patio and using my dryer less by hanging clothes to dry as much as I can.

Surprising Successes

Most surprising to me is the Seattle and Puget Sound Eco Workshops Calendar I compile. There are SO many more hands-on workshops in all shades of green in this area than I first imagined! Wow. It’s a lot to keep up with. Plus, I put it out on the web before I had completely finished developing the site because the content is just too good not to share, and it’s been surprisingly well-received.

Having Trouble With

Driving less is difficult for me. Currently I drive to my clients’ offices, and I would like to be able to bus or bike or walk when possible.

Giving Back

The Eco Calendar is a huge donation of my time at this stage. I also volunteer with my eco-minded UU church, and have volunteered with my kids’ schools and theatre programs. I buy locally when I can, and am learning as much as I can about all things eco.

Description

boopalina + bebe is a line of well-conceived, high-quality children’s bedding, decor, and accessories designed to suit the aesthetic and lifestyle of the modern family. Inspired by mid-century design, we fit style-conscious parents and their babes with products that are a balance of simplicity, utility, and sustainability. Our collection blends contemporary prints, the softest of organic bamboo fabrics, rare vintage modern textiles, and reclaimed materials- delivering a fresh and unexpected perspective to children’s design. Launched by entrepreneur and mama of two Kristen Angelo, all boopalina + bebe items are designed and meticulously handcrafted in the greater Seattle area.

Steps Taken

Our products use certified organic bamboo/organic cotton blend fabrics, salvaged vintage modern textiles, and reclaimed materials. We’ve reduced paper usage by supplying our customers with a electronic invoices and packing slips sent directly to their email addresses.

Surprising Successes

The response to our products has been amazing. Our limited collection of kerchiefs crafted from organic fleece and salvaged vintage fabrics has been featured by Small Magazine, Cool Mom Picks, Inhabitots.com, and Notcouture.com. I certainly didn’t expect such an a flattering response.

Having Trouble With

Too much to do, not enough time…or hired help to do it! I’m running a business from home with kiddos at feet.

Giving Back

Our production fabric remnants are donated to various elementary schools throughout Pierce County in an effort to foster creative arts. We also just recently completed an application to join 1% for the planet.

I am a Seattle native. Single mother. Organic, gluten free vegan interested in raw diet. Spend as much time as possible outdoors. Try to show my 3 year old son as much as I can about mother earth and giving back to her.

Green Steps Taken

Consumption, packaging. I have noticed my recycle is always full. I used to be proud of that until I realized that although I was recycling everything I could I was still consuming. I now look for ways to reuse more and consume less. We do not purchase things with excessive packaging. We also shop more locally.

Surprising Successes

Reusing many items whenever possible that would typically be recycled in the city recycle or thrown away.

Having Trouble With

I am trying to convince a room mate about living in a more aware consciousness. We are currently working on composting and garden water saving.

Giving Back

For years I have been involved through my business with many charitable events. I have organized small fundraisers for Make-A-Wish foundation, animal rights organizations and am currently working on gathering donations and preparing food for homeless families living in tent cities. I have a strong desire to become a bigger advocate of hemp education and awareness.

I am a freelance writer on all thing sustainable, healthy and luxurious in the realm of eco fashion, organic beauty, and a beautiful green lifestyle. I currently write for my own blog, theecodiva.blogspot.com, am a guest blogger for PlanetPinknGreen.com, and am a featured writer for GreenLiving.Suite101.com.

Steps Taken

Personally, I have completely changed the way I shop. When it comes to groceries, I shop bulk, bring my own bags and have really re-discovered my passion for cooking at home.

In business, I write about, research and recommend amazing companies and individuals who are creating products in an ethical fashion. This means having an awareness of not only the quality and eco aspects of the products itself, but also taking time to consider the process in which it is created. This equals ethical luxury.

Surprising Successes

I have been thrilled to discover a true community of other women and men who are open to sharing information, open to connecting and exchanging ideas and most of all, I have been pleasantly surprised in seeing how much is being done to make things better in every corner of the world.

Having Trouble With

My constant gremlin is staying organized. I am a work at home mom to a magical toddler. Between my playtime with him, loving to spend time with my hunky hubby, and taking time for ME…the organizing tends to stay on the back burner a bit too long at times.

Giving Back

I shop local for almost all my personal needs. I have been writing a regular feature on creating your own beauty products at home. I work with the local moms group to set up clothing and toy swaps to help in reusing, reducing and recycling the wonderful STUFF we all have but have grown out of. I have not purchase a single winter jacket for my son since he was born. We always swap out the small stuff for the next set of sizes. Community swaps are an amazing way to meet other moms, connect with local community and cut spending.

Description

I am a designated Certified Built Green™ Professional: Real Estate and a Washington state licensed real estate salesperson serving the major Seattle metropolitan area. I have worked in real estate or related industries since 1991. My background includes residential real estate, multifamily, retail, and commercial property management, mortgage broker marketing, or related service companies in those areas. My personal passion and focus is green living – and how we can “live with” ourselves from a sustainable Earth perspective. My husband and I chose West Seattle as our home when we were married in 1997. We love it here! In 2007 we “downsized” and bought a townhome in the newly redeveloped mixed-income Built Green™ Certified Community of High Point. My rescued Italian greyhound, Sophia, and I organize The High Point K9 Club. We enjoy walks together in our! neighborhood and other Pacific Northwest great green spaces! We also have 3 cats.

Steps Taken

I have done all of the obvious things, like organic food and gardening, non-toxic paint, CFLs, etc., but still am challenged by the cost of greening my wardrobe and having limited options for other things in my life I wish to purchase and there are no options.

Surprising Successes

Deciding to take my green lifestyle further by selling my home and moving into a Built Green Certified townhome in High Point, a Built Green Certified Community.

Having Trouble With

Wardrobe is the biggest challenge.

Description

Dr. Epstein is a naturopathic physician licensed by the State of Washington, and graduate of Bastyr University. She focuses on helping people restore their health using natural medicines and treatments that stimulate the body’s own self-healing power. She takes a systemic approach, supporting patients through nourishing food and lifestyle changes, and nautral treatments that support discovery of optimum wellness.

Dr. Epstein’s special interests include:
**Cleansing and Detoxification
**Stress-care, including sleep regulation
**Healing digestive disturbances
…as well as General Medicine – from annual wellness checkups and seasonal illness to managing and treating chronic disease.

Green Steps Taken

I’m just getting this business opened up, and am hoping to learn, by networking with likeminded folks, some things about environmental and sustainability topics that I haven’t thought of on my own.

Currently Working On

I’m a recycler/composter/buy-in-bulk sort of person at home, and will transfer those habits to my business.

Surprising Successes

I’m just getting my practice open in the next couple weeks, so hope to have much to report in the near future!

Having Trouble With

Three areas that I’m planning to investigate include: 1) while I use non-toxic and some home-made cleaners at home, I need to figure out how to meet the different needs for sterility in a doctor’s office, with the least-toxic products I can find. 2) I’m struggling with the issue of throwaway vs. reusable medical tools, specifically gynecological specula – the plastic generates more waste, but the metal ones I think use probably nasty chemicals to sterilize in the pre-treatment phase, and I have to figure out which is the lesser of 2 evils, and 3) over time I’d like to find a good e-records system, so I don’t have to generate and store huge piles of paper (aka charts).

Growing Your Business

I’m definitely looking to work with patients who are passionate about the environment – both the external and internal environments (which are intimately connected, of course!)

Giving Back

I volunteer my time to give talks on health and wellness in the community. I am an avid recycler, composter, pollution-minimizer, consumption-limiter.

OTRA VEZ is the Spanish word for again, or another time. At Otra Vez we believe in the creative reuse of all things used. By giving discarded, unwanted or unneeded items another life through beautiful and unique pieces, Otra Vez takes the concept of RECYCLING into a new realm of possibilities. Reusing materials lengthens the life of individual objects which decreases our impact on the environment.
At OTRA VEZ we believe in giving everyone and everything a second chance. Otra Vez is the Spanish word for again, or another time. At Otra Vez we encourage in the creative re-use of all things used. By giving discarded, unwanted or unneeded items another life through beautiful and unique pieces, Otra Vez takes the concept of RECYCLING into a new realm of possibilities. Reusing materials lengthens the life of individual objects, which decreases our impact on the environment. Each of our one-of-a-kind earrings and cards are made from RECLAIMED, RECYCLED, SALVAGED, or VINTAGE materials. At Otra Vez we are passionate about making a difference not only in our environment, but also in the lives of others around the world. We believe in encouraging and empowering all women to independence and a place of self-sustainment. We are also dedicated to offering hope to women, children, and families in war torn countries such as Sudan, Africa.

Green Steps Taken

At Otra Vez each of our one-of-a-kind earrings and cards and gifts are made from RECLAIMED, RECYCLED, SALVAGED, or VINTAGE materials.

Currently Working On

We are currently working on developing Otra Vez to include mosaics, photography printed on discarded material, baby clothes and items made from discarded/salvaged textiles, and finding other socially conscious artists to represent under Otra Vez. And of course, we are always marketing ourselves, our vision, and our products, in hopes of expanding.

Surprising Successes

The amazing response we have had to our products and the warmth with which we are consistently received.

Having Trouble With

Fitting enough work hours into each day, taming our creative minds to focus on our most lucrative and promising ideas.

Growing your business

The best things about watching Otra Vez grow are the increased possibilities we have to raise awareness, give back to others and positively change lives. We also love the idea the of one day being stay at home mom’s and providing for our families while expressing ourselves creatively as artists.

Giving Back

We are all about supporting both our local and global communities. We always buy locally when possible and support other local artists and small businesses. 10% of our net proceeds directly support Women for Women International and the Save Darfur Coalition, two excellent non-profit organizations.
Residential and Commercial Cleaning

Steps Taken

We recently bought reusable, washable bags for our rags in place of plastic bags. We are using water to clean mirrors in place of glass cleaner. I am having to rethink my cleaning method and products in order to become green. I am also trying to restructure how we run the business to become more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Currently Working On

I am working on ways to use less water. I’m looking for a really great disinfectant I can buy in bulk. Also, I am looking for a stainless steel polish that is environmentally safe and still polishes like my current product.

Having Trouble With

I am currently having trouble finding green products that deliver the same results as my current products.

Surprising Successes

Going green will cut down on our overhead and help us operate on a higher level of consciousness.

Growing Your Business

Becoming green and knowing that we are contributing to a greener world though the products we use and the services we provide.

Giving Back

The business donates to Breast Cancer Research each year. We purchase a multipurpose, biodegradable, non-toxic cleaner in bulk. We need to be more involved in the local community…

Description

Children’s resale store recycling gently used childrens clothing, shoes, toys, books and gear for ages 0-10.

Steps Taken

We just opened so we haven’t done much to become “more” anything quite yet. Of course the nature of the business is all about recycling. We do sell new products as well and try to focus on eco-friendly and/or local products primarily. We are still building out this part of our business.

We are currently working on sourcing local and/or eco-friendly new products.

Surprising Successes

We were able to build out our 2300 sq. ft. store out with primarily used fixtures.

Growing Your Business

I believe there is already a large market of parents who purchase gently used items due to either being frugal and/or being conscious of the impact of new products on the environment.

Giving Back

We just opened so we really haven’t made much progress yet towards being involved with the community although it certainly is a goal.

I am a recent transplant from Northern California currently employed through Habitat for Humanity of East King County/Americorps. Our affiliate strives to create green and truly affordable housing in EKC.

My daughter and I have voluntarily simplified our lives by downsizing personal items – utilizing public transport/vanpool – we live in communal housing and within our shared housing cook food for one another throughout the week with local, organic foods.

Surprising Successes

Preparing yummy shared meals, vanpooling, green building!

Having Trouble With

Transportation when not vanpooling – beauty rituals.

It is my intention that through a blend of quiet intuition, nuturing treatment techniques and client education we can work together to support and inspire profound changes toward personal healing and growth.

Specializing in the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage, Female Reproductive Care, Fertility Enhancement, Intuitive Touch, Deep Tissue Massage, Prenatal and Postpartum Massage, Energy Work and Herbal and Nutritional Support.

Green Steps Taken:

I recycle everything I can.
I compost my food waste.
I am learning how to grow more of my own food (very exciting!)
I bring my own mug and water bottle with me.
I use environmentally friendly products in my home and office.
I use canvas tote bags when I grocery shop.
I buy in bulk and try to stay away from products that are heavy on the plastics and packaging.
I read labels now and try to shop local/organic whenever possible.
I work to educate my clients about lifestyle/diet changes which will have a positive impact on their health and the health of the planet.

Surprising Successes:

My biggest green successes I owe to my computer. Putting my intake forms up online and sending clients information through email instead of photocopying & mailing has saved paper, time and money!

Having Trouble With:

I am working on reducing overall paper use in my practice.

Description:

We have a line of eco-friendly products for women and kids. We started with the Hip GripTM, a reusable fabric cup sleeve for lattes and now we do stainless steel water bottles and waste free lunchboxes.

Green Steps Taken:

We operate out of my basement, so there’s no commute. We really think about how we ship and receive our products to create as little waste as possible.

Currently Working On:

We would like to expand our line, but it’s been really hard in this economy. I would love to invent the perfect reusable gift wrap solution!

Surprising Successes:

The Hip Grip™ cup sleeve has been embraced by some big companies. We put logos! on them for businesses and would love to have similar success with our new waste free lunchbox for schools.

Having Trouble With:

We would love to manufacture our products locally, but it is prohibitively expensive. We still do some of our Hip Grips here in Seattle, but our margin is so small it’s VERY hard to sustain.

Growing My Business:

We want to create quality, useful products for women and their kids. There’s a lot of pressure in manufacturing to produce more products to get the price down and we need to stay true to our values. It’s hard to envision growth while we are trying hard to just hang on right now….

Giving Back:

I am the Chair of the Sustainability Committee at my kids school. We also donate annually to Coffee Kids, an organization that promotes educational opportunities for children in coffee growing countries.

Green Steps Taken:

I have a background in designing sustainable apparel with organic cotton and other alternative fibers, and together with my husband and his affinity for nature, we aspired to make choices that would help us live greener lifestyles, not just in our household, but also in our businesses. Before each new purchase of a product or service we research all of our options and search for the most sustainable choice. We drive a hybrid Prius, use an energy star rated printer, use 100% PCW Recycled Paper, we reduce, reuse and recycle everything that we can and we also participate in green power programs available from our local utility providers.

Surprising Successes:

I was part of the design team that developed the first organic cotton yoga wear to be sold in Sam’s Club. The line was well received and helped to introduce more organic cotton apparel into the Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart stores.

Growing My Business:

The most important thing about growing my business is to stay true to myself and my beliefs.

Giving Back:

I volunteer my time and talent to many local organizations that involve creativity and the urban youth.

As a business, the most challenging aspect as been to limit the driving for meetings, errands and events. In addition to carpooling, we try to work around this by organizing our day so that the have-tos are done back-to-back.

Currently Working On

Our book, “Celebrate Green! Creating Eco-Savvy Holidays, Celebrations and Traditions for the Whole Family” debuted on October 1st, 2008.

We also provide speaking and consulation services to individuals, oranizations and businesses on how to make celebrating green simple, affordable and fun.

Corey is also the director of Green Halloween, which is licensed to a Seattle based non-profit called Treeswing.

Surprising Successes

How willing people are to not only think green, but to act green during their most important events of their lives (holidays, birthdays, baby showers, etc.)

Having Trouble With

The elimination of petrochemical-based plastic.

Growing Your Business

Like anyone involved in non-profit and/or environmental work, we are trying to work ourselves out of a job. If everyone began making green choices 365 days a year, there wouldn’t be a need for us; and we’d celebrate!

Giving Back

Green Halloween, the initiative we founded, is a non-profit movement rasing money for worth causes from California to Connecticut. Through sponsorship and our Featured Vendor Program, we’re raising thousands of dollars for organizations doing essential work in our communities. We’re also donating a percentage of our profits (from our book and website advertising) to selected non-profits such as Treeswing and Healthy Child, Healthy World.

I am the former owner of Zootsuit Custom Apparel, now teaching recyCouture and basic sewing. I am also the director, producer, artisan, designer, writer, marketing front person etc of fashionRIP a multiple medium, collaborative, art installation project Ialso write articles for Green for Good and volunteer at the Sanctuary Art Center.

Green Steps Taken:

Custom Apparel kept me out of the mass production mode which I’ve always disliked. After closing the biz I went back to school and received more degrees (4) as well as a Certificate in Communications, Business and Media. I saw connections between disciplines which is now validated by the sustainable movement….yes!

Now the fashion and textile realm is where I focus, utilizing much of what I have gathered along my path. I started the Art Guild of Sustainable Ballard in 2004 and though I let go the leadership I remain in touch. One of the last classes I had Spring 2008 was in Environmental Science. Wow–a must do for all of us.

I bus when possible, teach recyCouture and refashion furniture as well. I have been invited to the Fashioning the Future Summit 2008 at the London College of Fashion and will try to do outcome presentations as many places as I can!

Surprising Successes:

The invite to the Summit!

Having Trouble With:

So far my work isn’t economically sustainable, I moved into my mothers home to go back to school which was a catalyst to this other work.

Giving Back:

I volunteer at the Sanctuary, am trying to volunteer at the Fremont Abbey in exchange for a few days use of their hall to shoot the video portion of the Species on the Verge chapter of fashionRIP. I write articles for Green for Good in exchange for goodwill.

Description:

I just graduated from UW with a conservation biology BS, and am now job hunting and setting up a home with my boyfriend, Max.

Green Steps Taken:

I have decreased the amount of new stuff I buy, mostly through shopping at thrift stores. Things that aren’t readily available used, I’ve bought new. Such as the toxin-free futon we recently purchased from Soaring Heart Natural Bedding here in Seattle. All of my cleaners and personal hygiene products are also non-toxic or natural alternatives such as vinegar/water. Although Max likes shiny new things, especially electronics, so we have purchased a fair number of totally new items to furnish our apartment.

I’ve also tried to green up my hobbies. I am an avid crocheter and make afghans for my friends and family. The last afghan I made entirely from organic cotton, which turned out to be quite pricey. My current project I’m using yarn I find at thrift stores, unraveling ugly sweaters, and buying a few skeins of renewable materials (bamboo, soy). This creates an interesting design challenge (of having to work with many colors) but is more environmental than traditional yarn and more reasonable than all sustainable fibers.

Surprising Successes:

I bought all of dishes from Goodwill, but only selected dishes from one maker (which made it take several months to get enough dishes) but because of that all of my dishes look like they go together, despite being different patterns.

Having Trouble With:

Compost has been such a challenge for me. I live in an apartment building that does not provide yard waste and does not have a balcony (for a compost bin). Eventually I will rally support among my neighbors and approach my apartment manager with a request for a yard waste bin, but I just moved in…

Giving Back:

I have just started volunteering in Wallingford and surrounding neighborhoods, but I hope to do more of that in the future. And like many people I buy local produce whenever I can.

I work with Greenworks Real Estate and I am pursuing my MBA in Sustainable Business at Bainbridge Graduate Institute. It is my hope and dream that we, as a country, dismiss words like greed and profit for new works like community and creativity.

Green Steps Taken

I have been driving on biofuel since 2005. I currently collect restaruant oil and make it. I just moved into a condo with my partner to demonstrate community living in my life. I work at root Connection in Woodinville once a week in exchange for organic veggies. Yum! Where I use to be a world traveler, I am grown to enjoy traveling b/c I know what my carbon footprint is when I step on that plane. I try to limit trips to visit family and special events.

Surprising Successes

Eating organic foods are helping me lose weight!

Having Trouble With

I still love a good bottle of wine. The bottle embodies a terrible footprint, but I just can’t buy the box o wine yet. (progress is being made in the direction though!)

Description

Earth friendly apparel for men, women, and baby, hand-printed by a local Seattle designer.

Green Steps Taken

I use all earth friendly solvents from soybeans in my screen printing process, as well as a recirculating water unit for cleaning my screens. I used to print on vintage clothing, now I also print on bamboo and organic cotton fabrics. Since my workshop is in my basement, I have been making a lot of improvements to make my house and shop more energy efficient.

Blossom Wrap

Currently Working On

I am upgrading to a conveyor dryer, which is more energy efficient, and also switching to brand new water based inks that are 100% natural.

Having Trouble With

Making my house/workshop more energy efficient has turned into a very big project, but I am getting there.

Most Important About Growing Business

I plan on staying a pretty small, local business. I may hire an employee or 2 in the future, but I want to stay small because it will be easier for me to ensure my business makes responsible choices for the earth.

Giving Back

I donate clothing to charities on a regular basis, and I have been involved in tutoring Seattle University’s fashion club. I also like talking to other business owners about green options.

Description:

I am the Marketing Manager and one of the owners of MC Electric Vehicles, a Seattle based electric car dealership. Through my involvement with MCEV I have become MUCH more aware of my impact on the environment, I was thrust into the ‘world of green’ and now I’m very much enjoying it!

Green Steps Taken:

I think the biggest thing that I have done is to drive an electric car on nearly a daily basis (I’d love to say it’s my only car, but they don’t work for my commute just yet). I have become much more community minded; I try to make sure my purchases come from as close to home as possible, I am working on bringing my company into a much more community & sustainable orientated mindset as well- we are working on ways to support local groups involved in sustainability. I have even made sure our company uses cups made from veggies and plates made from sugar cane!

Surprising Successes:

I don’t know that this is the most surprising necessarily, but it’s my favorite for sure. I have started purchasing nearly all of my groceries through Spud.com, a delivery service that stocks organic and local food- and I LOVE IT! It is such an EASY way to support local businesses and! farmers, I can’t believe I hadn’t done this sooner.

Having Trouble With:

I’m not sure that there are really ‘methods’ that I’m having trouble with. I really want to continue to ‘makeover’ my life, my little world, into a more green and eco-friendly environment- but it takes time. I think my problem is that I want to go through and overhaul everything because I’m genuinely excited about it. BUT, I also know that part of this new mindset is not being wasteful, so until my energy draining light bulbs burn out, they will remain.

Giving Back:

I would love to become more involved in my community; I’m ashamed to say I do not volunteer right now, I’m hoping with the slow season coming up I will be able to so. I am in charge of marketing and web design for my business and as a part of that I created a community partners program- we work with other eco-friendly businesses to help support eachother. I am also working on ways to further support groups like the Sierra Club and Earth 911 through our new website and through educational materials in our showrooms.

I make & use reusable bags, we turn off the lights when we aren’t in a room, my in-laws know to bring a couple of extra sweatshirts in the winter – our house hovers around 58F for a few months… I am trying to teach my girls to take care of our! earth from their earliest years. We recycle everything we can. We get our produce from a CSA farm 4 miles from our house, as well as growing what we can in our small backyard garden… we share the extra with our neighbors. All of us use a Sigg water bottle every day rather than plastic. My girls take their lunch in a Laptop Lunchbox to cut down on waste, and to eat healthier food than the school offers (ugh!). We are trying!

Surprising Successes:

The grocery bags. I already had an online store selling handbags, but after having my personal grocery bags bought off of my shoulder a few times, I decided to make reusable grocery bags to sell – but they are cute, and don’t have a store logo emblazoned across them.

Having Trouble With:

Cutting down on water. My girls are… well, girls. They like to take long showers. Really long ones. We are working on this with each shower!

Giving Back:

We buy local as much as possible. I try to tell everyone around me what we all need to do… unfortunately much of it falls on deaf ears. I know some is getting through though – I watch my in-laws and note that they at least think about some things now! And they are using reusable grocery bags – cute ones!

Creating Eco-Savvy Holidays, Celebrations and Traditions for the Whole Family,” as well as our consultancy. We work with individuals and businesses to green up their celebrations.

Corey and Lynn

Green Steps Taken:

We started out green and doing our best in this direction is a basic value. We sought out a green publisher, are keeping hard copy marketing materials to a minimum, support green, sustainable, eco-friendly, Fair Trade businesses. We’re giving a portion of the proceeds of our book to two non-profits,www.Treeswing.org and www.HealthChild.org.

Currently Working On:

At this moment, I’m working on PR for our book.

Having Trouble With:

The hardest thing is to find local suppliers who are price competitive. We are committed to buying everything locally and on a personal level, we’re not opposed to spending more, but as a business, especially in our current situation, we simply cannot afford it. We had hoped to have our book printed here but couldn’t find a printer who was close to competitive with the Canadian printer we chose (FSC certified and printing on recycled paper etc.)

Surprising Successes:

We’ve been able to find so many partners who are like minded and want to support us and what we’re doing.

Growing My Business:

Growing our business is fully dependent on partnerships, collaboration and interest from others. We know we have an incredible book that can really make a difference, but due to circumstances way beyond our control, we’ve had to take over the production from a publisher. This means most of our money has gone into printing the book, leaving little for marketing. So we are dependent on word of mouth and collaborative agreements to succeed.

Giving Back:

I mentioned earlier that a portion of the proceeds of our book is going to Treeswing, a Seattle non-profit that is doing tremendous work in the schools to support children. One of their new initiatives is to see that every child in a particular grade, receives a jump rope. Their focus is on getting kids active, up off the couch and into the world of nature. We also mention many local businesses in our book and will continue to support them on our website and blog. If we can somehow advertise what they sell around a holiday, we want to do it. And of course, we want to buy local whenever possible.

Description:

Earth-friendly landscape design, installation and maintenance – of both residential and commercial properties in the Greater Seattle Area.

Green Steps Taken:

Our commitment to using native plant material means plants grow in their natural setting among the elements they inherently crave in terms of their need for water, sun and natural nutrients. As such, we design to encourage a reduced need for supplemental watering with an emphasis on proper plant selection and placement. Furthermore, we foster a nutrient-rich environment through our choice in soil products and amendment techniques.
No one likes weeds and pests, including us. That’s why we’re committed to using eco-friendly alternatives to keep them at bay! Our landscape team is trained in integrated pest management techniques and natural weed suppression methods. Our strategy includes working from the soil up creating the healthiest environment possible for the landscape, not only so the plants flourish, but so the natural ecosystem thrives as well. If necessary, we use mulches or natural products to aid in weed suppression and/or to increase the beneficial insects.

Having Trouble With:

The environmental impact of driving large vehicles!

Growing My Business:

Continuing to have fun, build personalized relationships with customers and be profitable!

Giving Back:

Akina Designs supports several charities through volunteer work and donations – the Outdoors for All Foundation is our charity of choice.

Description:

Women’s Organic Cotton Apparel

Green Steps Taken:

Our clothing is made from 100% Certified Organic Cotton, in the USA and from low-impact fiber reactive dyes. We try to make deliveries to local boutique ourselves as to avoid all the back and forthness with the post office or UPS, etc. We reuse shipping boxes, packaging and use biobags (which are made from corn) instead of plastic garment bags which is the norm in the industry. We also use recycled paper clothing hangtags and hemp/cotton clothing labels. We also give one percent of annual sales to 1% for the planet, which helps us help the environment.

Currently Working On:

We are proud members of the Organic Trade Association and our application is pending approval at Co-op America.

Having Trouble With:

Not everyone is open to clothing made from organic cotton and it has been difficult trying to educate consumers one at a time.

Surprising Successes:

The fact that most of our customers (stores) appreciate our reused packaging and biobags.

Growing My Business:

To continue to keep quality high, fashion a must and prices low for our customers.

Giving Back:

YES! We contribute to local charities and support other mom business’s in the area (see northwestenterprisingmoms.com)

Description:

Fashion Ethic is an online boutique specializing in “Fashionably Responsible” apparel and accessories from independent, eco-friendly, and socially conscious designers.

Green Steps Taken:

We were founded on the idea of creating a mainstream boutique experience were conscious consumerism and sustainable products are the norm, rather than the exception.

Currently Working On:

Sourcing fashionable and sustainable lines of apparel and accessories that are high quality but not high priced; growing product lines into childrens and mens; considering more promotions where we can raise money for good causes.

Having Trouble With:

Hard to find good eco-friendly labels! Not sure about the pros and cons over carbon-offset shipping practices – it seems to be a new recommendation every day. Also, ensuring that bamboo fabrics and fibers are harvested and processed in an ecologically-friendly way…this has been in the news, thanks to the conventional textile PR machine.

Surprising Successes:

Finding that the US Postal Service is one of the greenest shipping options! Hearing from customers who notice the “fresh smell” of their hand-dyed, organic clothing when they open the package.

Growing My Business:

That the customer loves the product and recognizes the value in organics, low-impact dyes, recycled or sustainable fibers, and sweatshop-free labor and that the company can maintain quality assurance as we bring on new designers and lines.

Giving Back:

I have always done a lot of volunteer work, from Big Brothers/Big Sisters to the Seattle chapter of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to events at my daughter’s schools. Fashion Ethic continues this involvement with different promotions and donations (local fundraising auctions, % of Sales to Myanmar relief, WWF, etc). Our buying guidelines call for only sustainable and sweatshop-free product purchases, and make it simple for customers to see what each garment represents. We employ interns from local fashion programs at SPU and AIS.

Description:

I offer Eco Lifestyle Coaching via holistic green assessments for home dwellers, business leaders, community groups, and educators; mentoring; eco-house parties; sustainable life coaching; class/workshop facilitation; and eco-party planning.

Green Steps Taken:

The biggest contribution I make is teaching others how to become peaceful and sustainable choice-makers. Because I believe that it is vitally important to model what I teach, I consider who and what I am affecting each time I make a decision. Some of the positive choices I make include adapting a compassionate work ethic, biking or busing to meet with clients, using eco-office materials, giving sustainable door prizes, ordering brochures from a company who uses renewable energy, etc.

New Processes:

Not much as I completed a degree in environmental sustainability and applied much of what I learned when I started my business.

Currently Working On:

I work out of my home, and I would like my house to be powered by the sun.

Having Trouble With:

I have not found a local AND green printing company who makes business cards.

Growing My Business:

I would like more clients, especially those who are open to change and see my services as a way to benefit all life (self, other people, animals, and the natural world).

Giving Back:

I currently have two pro-bono accounts and strive to have one per month. I am a member of my local CoolMoms chapter and have been active in PhinneyGreenwood Climate Change Action Now! (CCAN!) for the last several years. I planned an eco-potluck for my neighbors last summer as I believe that building community is a huge part of being sustainable. I try to purchase as little as possible. When I do consume, I choose sustainable offerings that benefit people, animals, and the environment.

Surprising Successes:

People who are already well on their way to being green have hired me.

Our homes are sanctuaries where we rejuvenate, entertain, share intimacy, raise our families, etc. Spaces that support, inspire and welcome us to do so are key elements in supporting us to live our best lives. It’s my honor to contribute to these experiences through my interior services.

Whether your style is mild, wild or in-between, eco-friendly interior styling can happen for you too!

Green Steps Taken:

I recycle everything possible, buy in bulk, buy less in non-recyclable packaging, condense errands to conserve fuel resources, print on recycled paper, use a laptop, buy recycled/sustainable when I can, use eco-friendly products. There is more, I’m sure.

Condensing errands is a big thing – getting oneself out of immediate gratification mode and waiting to do an errand, if possible, until I am going to be in that area of town. I also find myself when I am on errands checking within to see if there is something else I need to do while I am in that area.

Currently Working On:

Currently, I’m researching what is the best method of alternatively powered transportation for my business and eventually, I’ll be purchasing green power and carbon offsets.

Having Trouble With:

Surprising Successes:

Growing My Business:

Leaving a lengthy trail of satisfied clients who know a bit more about environmental products after having their spaces decorat! ed and are better networked with green businesses for services.

Giving Back:

I have plans to donate my services in the future and am currently researching how that is going to take form.

I am currently learning about graphic design by attending classes at the School of Visual Concepts and by working with Kaytlyn Sanders at Benefical Design. I have two environmental studies/science degrees from the University of Washington that have influenced my designs to be innovative and as environmentally friendly as possible.

Green Steps Taken:

I utilize natural light throughout the day, sleep my computer and monitor when not using it. I turn my tv and dvd player off at the power strip to keep them from drawing power even when they’re “off.” I buy local food whenever possible and walk to the grocery store with my reusable totes for the rest. My family is a member of the Helsing Junction CSA. Our house has three non-CFL light bulbs and we never use those bulbs! I try not to drive whenever possible and try to combine errands into one trip. I print on the back of old documents and papers before putting them into the recycle bin.

New Processes:

As an aspiring graphic designer, I find it hard to determine the most environmentally responsible ways to be a print designer. I love print design, but it tends to use more materials than digital design. I enjoy the challenge to minimize material usage and maximize re-usability in my designs.

Having Trouble with:

I’m having trouble with the car situation. Living in Lynnwood but having family all around the area and a dog that goes everywhere with me, I find it hard to use public transportation for more than just special occasions.

Surprising Successes:

Learning that I can be an environmentally friendly designer and that my environmental degrees will be more useful to me in the design profession than they ever were in the environmental profession.

Giving Back:

I am on the board for my Homeowners Association where I am currently proposing the use of solar power for the common areas in our Association. I have also started a campaign to recycle more and throw away less in our development.

Community Involvement:

I love to buy locally and will pop out of bed at 8:30 on the weekends to go to a Farmer’s Market. I enjoy buying local furniture and housewares rather than things from box stores.

Corporate sell out—Working for the Man (Jewelry Chain Headquarters)

Print and Web designer (Beneficial Design)

Green Steps Taken:

REDUCE. REUSE. RECYCLE.

Use public transportation and bike instead of driving

Carpool

Recycle, give to a new home and donate items

CFL light bulbs

No air conditioning

Borrow before buying

Think twice before purchasing

Purchasing sustainable and organic products

Supporting our community by trying to buy locally

New Processes:

It was very hard for me to bring my own shopping bags with me now that I do not have a car. Before I could leave them in the back seat and whenever I stopped somewhere I could use them instead of taking a plastic bag.

I also forget to realize how easy it is to make a few daily changes. I refill a Nalgene instead of buying water bottles, I bring a coffee mug instead of drinking out of disposable cups. I turn the lights out when I leave the room. I think twice before printing.

Also, you forget to consider everything…the obvious things to practice sustainability is produce, energy and paper. But don’t forget cleaning products and other chemicals that can harm the earth. Most importantly I believe it is easy to forget our community by shopping locally.

Having Trouble with:

I think change is the hardest choice for businesses. It affects many instead of one, but by committing to change means you are making a bigger impact quicker. It seems like a hefty dollar every time you need to invest in a new practice, product or belief. In the long run you can help yourself and the world by being sustainable-conscious. You will save money in the end and you’ll feel good doing so.

Surprising Successes:

Saving on energy! Just look over your electric bill…you’ll be glad and have extra bucks in your pocket.

Promoting Green Outside the Home:

It is hard to preach to the choir or all people that have busy hectic lives. The best way for me to influence others is by my actions and testimonials.

Community Involvement:

I donate monetarily and run races for good causes

I buy local products and services: Mode Salon Seattle, farmers markets

Fair trade is important too, you can find that easily when purchasing coffee

I work where I’m passionate and that usually means we believe in the same ideals: Beneficial Design
